Special Invitation | Lerato Dumse & Zanele Muholi Present: Pride and Loss
If in Amsterdam, please join us for the official opening of “Pride and Loss.” This 'visual documentation' of South Africa's LGBTI activism, curated by Lerato Dumse, presents the works of Boitumelo Nkopane, Collen Mfazwe, Lebogang Mashifane, Lerato Dumse, Thembela Dick and Velisa Jara. The works of these artists, all beneficiaries of Zanele Muholi's Photo XP project, express the 'visual activism' that articulates the existence and resistance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex citizens of South Africa.
Zanele Muholi will be present at the opening.
Centering around ‘Pride and Loss,’ the works were produced for prides, funerals, marches, church services and other related LGBTI events between 2014 and now. While South Africa’s Constitution is one of the most progressive in the world, recognising freedom of sexual orientation, members of its LGBTI communities still also face violence, hate crime, humiliation and marginalisation.
The exhibition aims to extend and maintain relationships and cooperation among members of the LGBTI community in South Africa, Amsterdam and beyond. ZAM, which has featured Muholi's work since 2006, warmly welcomes this new collaboration between the activist artist and the No Man's Art Gallery.
"Pride and Loss" will open on Thursday 3 August 2017 between 17h00 and 21h00 at No Man's Art Gallery, Weteringschans 69 in Amsterdam.
In 2016 December I was privileged to work and learn from the Ladies from Mukondeni Village in Venda, close to Elim in Limpopo province in South Africa.
One of kind ceramic pieces. All handmade and signed with CC's potter's mark. No mass production, but each piece lovingly made by hand.
