ALPOA (A Little Piece of Africa) 17 July - 19 September 2009 www.artspace.de artSPACE Gallery African Mellenials 22 June 2009  de Avond van de    AFRICAN MILLENNIALS MAANDAG 22 JUNI 2009 - LLOYD HOTEL, AMSTERDAM ZAM en de Culturele Ambassade nodigen u uit voor Lloyd Time on Monday's gewijd aan de African Millenials.  Ontmoet een nieuwe, opkomende Afrikaanse generatie op zoek naar antwoorden op de wereldwijde crises en de vele problemen waarmee landen op het continent zich geconfronteerd zien. Amerikaanse Millennials lieten hun stem reeds horen, ze hielpen Barack Obama aan de overwinning. Wat doen hun leeftijdgenoten op het Afrikaanse continent? Voor hen lijkt de uitdaging zoveel groter. Hoe keren zij het tij?  Wie zijn ze en wat hebben ze te zeggen? Ze komen uit alle hoeken van het Afrikaanse continent en studeren, werken en leven in Europa. PROGRAMMA maandag 22 juni voertaal Engels 20:00 uur:  Aanvang met muziek van DJ Pietsol 20:30 uur:  Perfomance-art en beeldende kunst van onder meer de Klas van 2000 21:15 uur:  Discussie met publiek over de continentale Leiderschapscrisis 23:00 uur:  Afsluiting met muziek van DJ Pietsol PRESENTATIE Amma Asante en Liesbeth Tjon A Meeuw BEELDENDE KUNST Beeldende Kunst van de Zuid-Afrikaanse Klas van 2000 aan de Tshwane University in Pretoria, met werk van Seretse Moletsane (1981), opgegroeid in Soweto, maakt zowel kunst als mode. Eric Rantisi (1981), maakt de koppeling tussen het heden en het verleden zichtbaar op zijn doeken. Carina Claassens (1981), woont en werkt als kunstenares in Amsterdam. Verder ook schilderijen van Steven Sikkens (1973, Curaçao) waarvan al een voorproefje in deze nieuwsbrief is te zien. Daarnaast performance-art van Carina Claassens en Fezekile Ntsukela (1974, Zuid-Afrika), die haar denkbeelden in dans heeft vertaald. MUZIEK DJ Pietsol draait wereldmuziek uit de Putumayo collectie: een funky mix van salsa, samba, funk, hip-hop en reggae. DISCUSSIE Vamba Sherif (1973, Liberia) is schrijver. Van hem verscheen onder meer bij Uitgeverij De Geus Zwijgplicht, waarin 'het officiële gezag en de geheime wetten van de Afrikaanse magie elkaar bevechten in het spel om de macht'. Gideon Chitanga (1981, Zimbabwe) is studentenleider die deelnam aan de verkiezingscampagnes van de huidige premier Tsvangirai. Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was een belangrijk doelwit in de heftige verkiezingsstrijd. Eyob Balcha (1984, Ethiopië) is studentenleider die met zijn medestudenten de onafhankelijke Afroflag Youth Vision heeft opgericht, met als doel het democratisch burgerschap onder de jeugd te bevorderen.   Philosophy of Poverty   Monday 20 April: 21.00-22.30 The Philosophy of Poverty and the Ethics of Ubuntu During the month of philosophy the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy will contribute with an African perspective on poverty. The South-African philosopher Murray Hofmeyr gives a lecture on 'The Philosophy of Poverty and the Ethics of Ubuntu'. Ghanaian philosopher Toni Kofi will relate this to the Ashanti of Ghana. Hofmeyr is in The Netherlands on invitation by Prof. HeinzKimmerle, who established together with Prof. Mogobe Ramose the first Department of Philosophy at the University of Venda in 1997. The evening will be led by philosopher Renate Schepen.   Future of development aid Development aid does more harm than good in Africa says Zambian economist and author Dambisa Moyo, so we should stop it. The Dutch journalist Linda Polman describes in her book 'crisis caravan' how development organisations often do more harm than good. Analysing the world behind the aid industry, she describes how large, wealthy aid organisations come pouring into relatively small and poor areas when there is a disaster, often creating imbalance. Another Dutch journalist reporting from Uganda, Marcia Luyten, recently published (NRC, 21 March 2009) an article on how Western development aid keeps looking from a Western perspective, measuring only concrete numbers, like the amount of people being able to have free education and health care, without taking into account the quality and often deterioration of these services. There seems to be a trend to strongly criticise Western development aid, but what is the solution?   Ubuntu and Poverty eradication The South-African philosopher Murray Hofmeyr researches the possibility of working from the ethics of 'Ubuntu', the African community based philosophy, in aim of combating poverty. He concludes that the ethics of ubuntu does not really have a chance to be mainstreamed when the philosophy of poverty has to reckon with the fact that the multinational corporation is the dominant institution of our time. Referring to a specific poverty eradication project he investigated (Pela Nambu), he concludes that for the project to succeed 'first economy' participation needs to be in the form of partnership and not charity. Toni Kofi (Ghana) will react on this thesis.   Exhibition contemporary and traditional South-African art From 11 t 26 April an African art exhibition can be visited in the public spaces of the Lloyd Hotel with photos by Dale Yudelman     from the series Reality Bites and work from  Nontobeko Mabongi Ntombela (multi-panelled pieces on traditionally "feminine" materials)curated by artist Carina Claassens. At the same time traditional Venda artworks will be shown from the collection of the Foundation for Intercultural Philosophy and Art at Zoetermeer. Dale Yudelman    , Reality Bites Lloyd Times on Monday's are public events on Monday night. This is an ad hoc program, related to what goes on in Lloyd Hotel as well as on the street and in the news. De muzikale omlijsting wordt verzorgd door de Italiaanse zanger/entertainer Massimo Bizzo. Ook Robbert zal een Italiaans nummer uit zijn repertoir ten gehore brengen. De tentoonstelling waaraan voornamelijk Florence Biennale 2007 deelnemers meedoen, zal duren tot 31 mei 2009. De expositie wordt o.a. georganiseerd door Eric Bende, ervaren kunstbemiddelaar en Anita de Harde, beeldend kunstenares. Tijdens de expositie periode zijn er nog andere evenementen gepland zoals diverse workshops en een muzikale middag met Martin Weber-Caspers.
