Festival voor het Afrikaans @ Tropentheater, Amsterdam: 17-19 Junie 2011

Het Festival voor het Afrikaans vindt plaats van 17 t/m 19 juni 2011 in de zalen van het prachtige Tropentheater in Amsterdam. Drie dagen lang zullen muziek, literatuur en dichtkunst en toneel elkaar afwisselen met de Afrikaanse taal als rode draad. Klinkende namen van Zuid-Afrikaanse artiesten die hun sporen inmiddels ook in Nederland verdiend hebben zullen van de partij zijn: wat te denken van Chris Chameleon, Gert Vlok Nel en Amanda Strydom. Ook de typische Afrikaanstalige rap uit de Kaapse kleurlingengemeenschap zal door D’Low vertegenwoordigd zijn.
Het literaire deel van het festival staat ook in het teken van grote Zuid-Afrikaanse namen. De vermaarde Breyten Breytenbach behoeft nauwelijks enige introductie, maar ook de jonge Kaapse dichteres Ronelda Kamfer (Winternachten 2010) en EKM Dido zullen ondersteund door muziek voordragen uit hun literaire werken.

Anyone can sign up to receive a sketchbook. Before joining our permanent collection, sketchbooks will be exhibited at select galleries across the US.

ZAM en de Culturele Ambassade nodigen u uit voor Lloyd Time on Monday's gewijd aan de African Millenials.
Ontmoet een nieuwe, opkomende Afrikaanse generatie op zoek naar antwoorden op de wereldwijde crises en de vele problemen waarmee landen op het continent zich geconfronteerd zien. Amerikaanse Millennials lieten hun stem reeds horen, ze hielpen Barack Obama aan de overwinning.
Wat doen hun leeftijdgenoten op het Afrikaanse continent? Voor hen lijkt de uitdaging zoveel groter. Hoe keren zij het tij?

MUZIEK
DJ Pietsol draait wereldmuziek uit de Putumayo collectie: een funky mix van salsa, samba, funk, hip-hop en reggae.
DISCUSSIE
Vamba Sherif (1973, Liberia) is schrijver. Van hem verscheen onder meer bij Uitgeverij De Geus Zwijgplicht, waarin 'het officiële gezag en de geheime wetten van de Afrikaanse magie elkaar bevechten in het spel om de macht'.
Gideon Chitanga (1981, Zimbabwe) is studentenleider die deelnam aan de verkiezingscampagnes van de huidige premier Tsvangirai. Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was een belangrijk doelwit in de heftige verkiezingsstrijd.
Eyob Balcha (1984, Ethiopië) is studentenleider die met zijn medestudenten de onafhankelijke Afroflag Youth Vision heeft opgericht, met als doel het democratisch burgerschap onder de jeugd te bevorderen.

The Philosophy of Poverty and the Ethics of Ubuntu
During the month of philosophy the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy will contribute with an African perspective on poverty. The South-African philosopher Murray Hofmeyr gives a lecture on 'The Philosophy of Poverty and the Ethics of Ubuntu'. Ghanaian philosopher Toni Kofi will relate this to the Ashanti of Ghana. Hofmeyr is in The Netherlands on invitation by Prof. HeinzKimmerle, who established together with Prof. Mogobe Ramose the first Department of Philosophy at the University of Venda in 1997.
The evening will be led by philosopher Renate Schepen.
Future of development aid
Development aid does more harm than good in Africa says Zambian economist and author Dambisa Moyo, so we should stop it. The Dutch journalist Linda Polman describes in her book 'crisis caravan' how development organisations often do more harm than good. Analysing the world behind the aid industry, she describes how large, wealthy aid organisations come pouring into relatively small and poor areas when there is a disaster, often creating imbalance. Another Dutch journalist reporting from Uganda, Marcia Luyten, recently published (NRC, 21 March 2009) an article on how Western development aid keeps looking from a Western perspective, measuring only concrete numbers, like the amount of people being able to have free education and health care, without taking into account the quality and often deterioration of these services. There seems to be a trend to strongly criticise Western development aid, but what is the solution?
Ubuntu and Poverty eradication
The South-African philosopher Murray Hofmeyr researches the possibility of working from the ethics of 'Ubuntu', the African community based philosophy, in aim of combating poverty.
He concludes that the ethics of ubuntu does not really have a chance to be mainstreamed when the philosophy of poverty has to reckon with the fact that the multinational corporation is the dominant institution of our time. Referring to a specific poverty eradication project he investigated (Pela Nambu), he concludes that for the project to succeed 'first economy' participation needs to be in the form of partnership and not charity. Toni Kofi (Ghana) will react on this thesis.
Exhibition contemporary and traditional South-African art
From 11 t 26 April an African art exhibition can be visited in the public spaces of the Lloyd Hotel with photos by Dale Yudelman
from the series Reality Bites and work from Nontobeko Mabongi Ntombela (multi-panelled pieces on traditionally "feminine" materials)curated by artist Carina Claassens.
At the same time traditional Venda artworks will be shown from the collection of the Foundation for Intercultural Philosophy and Art at Zoetermeer.

Florence Biennale Revisted in Den Haag
Dit cultureel evenment is bedoeld om kunstenaars die deelgenomen hebben aan de
te promoten, alsook bekendheid te geven aan deze expressie van eigentijdse kunst.
Op 5 april 2009 wordt een groepsexpositie op feestelijke wijze geopend door presentator en musicalster
Massimo Bizzo. Ook Robbert zal een Italiaans nummer uit zijn repertoir ten gehore brengen.
De tentoonstelling waaraan voornamelijk Florence Biennale 2007 deelnemers meedoen, zal duren tot 31 mei 2009. De expositie wordt o.a. georganiseerd door Eric Bende, ervaren kunstbemiddelaar en Anita de Harde, beeldend kunstenares.

Wat deze kunstenaars met elkaar verbindt is het proces van bevrijding en euforie, de vrijheid van uiting en het kunnen afschudden van oude banden, maar ook subtiele statements over en verkenningen van identiteit, macht en verbinding.
Alex Trapani maakt abstracte perspex prints die de gladde, vlotte technologische kant van het stadsleven laten zien, terwijl de schilferende installaties van karton van Happy Dhlame refereren aan stedelijk verval en ongelijkheid. De fotografische beelden van Dale Yudelman portretteren het scherpe contrast tussen ontheemde straatkinderen en opzichtige patserige rijkdom in Zuid-Afrika.
Colbert Mashile’s gewaagde portretten geven uiting aan zijn emotionele oproep “roads diverge, I take all”, terwijl boven Vusi Beauchamp’s beeld van katten en muizen het woord ‘revolt” in de lucht hangt. Een verwijzing naar wat gaat komen in Zuid-Afrika?
Simmi Dullay richt zich op een nieuwe post-koloniale identiteit met een textuur van woorden en beelden, Nontobeko Ntombela keert juist terug naar de traditie door ‘sheshwe’ (traditionele Afrikaanse kleden) in haar werk te gebruiken.
De met inkt doordrenkte en hermetisch in perspex blokken opgesloten doeken van Natasha de Wet confronteren ons met isolatie en verwonding als gevolg van uitsluiting.
En in Cecile Heystek’s uit hout gesneden sculpturen zijn het juist de banale objecten die het persoonlijke in het alledaagse laten zien dat kan verbinden.
Identity, power and association
Nine South African contemporary visual artists expose new work in Amsterdam. What ties them together is their process of liberation and euphoria, the freedom of expression and breaking away from traditional ties, but also subtle assertions and explorations of identity, power and attachment.
Images ranging from technologically slick abstract print on Perspex (Alex Trapani) to the peeling cardboard installations of Happy Dhlame, representing decaying surfaces and disparities of urban life, this offers a vivid view of contemporary South-African art. Breaking down perceptions of Africaness and the African continent.

Afrovibes, het zinnenprikkelende Zuid-Afrikaanse Festival voor theater, dans, film en beeldende kunst, vindt dit jaar plaats van 26 september t/m 6 oktober in Amsterdam en Den Haag. Het festival brengt een reeks spraakmakende en baanbrekende voorstellingen uit Zuid-Afrika naar Nederland, met een mix van toonaangevende, grote namen en jonge, aanstormende artiesten uit de Zuid-Afrikaanse theater- en kunstwereld. Rode draad dit jaar is erotiek en hoe daar op verschillende manieren mee wordt omgegaan in Zuid-Afrika.

'Instants' international painting exhibition in Istanbul
As part of 'Instants', an International Painting Exhibition by Erenus Art at Dolmabahce Palace Museum Art Gallery - Besiktas/ Istanbul, Carina Claassens will be exhibiting some of her more recent work.
Claassens was born in South Africa and educated at Tswane University. She later moved to Mozambique and has recently moved to The Netherlands.
